Katherine Davis: – Blues, Gospel and Jazz Vocals
Katherine Davis was raised on music – from Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holliday to Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters to Mahalia Jackson and Aretha Franklin. Katherine’s unique musical approach and her command of various musical styles is saturated in blue.
After opera studies at the Sherwood Conservatory of Music, under the direction of Maria D’ Albert, Davis went on to play Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith to critical acclaim, in Kuumba Theatre’s production of "In the Heart of the Blues". She has also written and starred in an autobiographical theater production entitled "I Dream in Blues."
Since her appearance with the "Blues in the Schools" children at the 1997 Chicago Blues Festival, Davis continues her ongoing involvement as an instructor in the valuable program. The Blues in the Schools program is an after-school or in-class K-12 arts education program that uses the blues tradition as its vehicle.
Her first CD, "Dream Shoes", on Chicago’s Southport Records and her own label Katy ‘D’ Records (2000), has met with rave reviews. John Barrett of Jazz USA wrote of the CD: "While apparently simple, this album speaks volumes – that’s true of the best music, and the best dreams." The recording features the late, great pianist Joe Johnson, pianist Erwin Helfer, drummers Isaac Redd Holt and the late Phil Thomas, and bassists John Whitfield and Tatsu Aoki.
On "Rock This House – Live!" by Katherine Davis and the Chicago Boogie Ensemble (The Sirens Records – 2006) Davis is joined by legendary musicians pianist Erwin Helfer, saxist John Brumbach and bassist John Whitfield, baritone saxophonist Willie Henderson, guitarist Lurrie Bell and drummer Kenny Smith.
Katherine continues to perform at clubs and concert venues at home in Chicago, and around the world.
Sumito Ariyoshi aka Ariyo – Pianist:
Pianist Sumito Ariyoshi left Kyoto, Japan 23 years ago after years of classical piano studies to pursue his dream of joining the ranks of Chicago bluesmen. Now an expert improviser, Ariyo represents the essence of Chicago blues. Over the years, Ariyoshi has played with blues guitarists Jimmy Rogers and Chicago legend Otis Rush, and the late vocalist Valerie Wellington.
Southport Records presents an ongoing series of events at Katerina’s on the first Saturday of every month! Label partners Bradley Parker-Sparrow, piano and Joanie Pallatto, voice will open each set with their original duets and improvisations. Southport Records will present a mix of artists from the label roster, featuring jazz, avant garde, classical, world and new music. The co-host of this event, Katerina’s, has evolved into a unique listening experience and environment, with fine programming, including jazz, world, and pop forms. As always, Katerina’s serves great cocktails and fine food! Katerina’s – an eclectic club with its soul in the arts.
