Artist Pat Surface

Patricia D. "Pat" Surface, age 75, of 1625 Highland Lane, Quincy, IL 62301, died Friday, December 23, 2011 at 5:45 pm, in her home.  Pat Surface was born Patricia Diane Yoder on September 5, 1936 in Kalona, Iowa, the daughter of Arnold and Vivian Fellendorf Yoder. She married Robert T. Surface on June 22, 1958 in Keota, Iowa. He survives.

Pat earned her degree from Iowa State University in Home Economics. After marrying and raising children, Pat attained a second degree in Art from Quincy University (formerly Quincy College). Pat was a versatile and accomplished artist in many different mediums. She was the founder of the Midsummer Arts Faire which has become an annual fine arts event in Washington Park each summer, and where an award is presented each year in Pat’s name. Pat also worked for several years for GS Robins and Company as an executive secretary and purchasing agent.

Pat was a member of Madison Park Christian Church where she volunteered in an artistic capacity for Vacation Bible School. She was past president of the Quincy Newcomers Club and would periodically substitute teach. She had been a member of the Great River Water Color Society in Quincy, and the Hannibal Art Club as well as a volunteer in numerous Hannibal art functions.

Survivors in addition to her husband include her daughters, Tracey (Fred Starr) Surface of Chicago, IL, Stephany (Greg) Taylor of Quincy, and Jennifer (Jay) Arrowsmith of Fowler, IL; several grandchildren, Zachary of Palatine, IL, Tony, Isaac and Jonah of Quincy, IL, and Vance and Olivia of Fowler, IL; two sisters, Shirley Boshart and Sharon Fuqua; a brother, Richard Yoder, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, Kevin Castle "Casey" Surface and Robert Patrick Surface, and a brother, Victor Yoder.

Hansen-Spear Funeral Directors are in charge of the arrangements.
